Meals: (B) Breakfast
Day 2: SAT May 5th, TOULOUSE to COLLIOURE via CARCASSONNE
We will travel first to the walled city of Carcassonne with time for lunch and to explore this fully walled historic town. Carcassonne has a long history from it's celtic origins dating back as far as 3500 BC as the celtic settlement, Carsac. The Romans fortified the hilltop around 100BC making it the colonia of Julia Carsaco, later, Carcasum. The Visigoths built more fortifications around 453AD. Carcassonne became famous in its role in the Albigensian Crusades, when the city was a stronghold of the Occitan Cathars. Your mind jumps back in time as we approach the double ring of ramparts with 53 imposing towers. As we cross the drawbridge to enter the walled city it is so easy to picture how people lived here hundreds of years ago. We will stay 4 nights in this delightful seaside resort town. This evening we will enjoy a Welcome Dinner at a cute tiny Tapas Bar. Meals:(B) Breakfast
Day 3: SUN May 6th, COLLIOURE (VILLEFRANCHE-DE-CONFLENT)
We enjoy breakfast before heading off to Villefranche-de-Conflent, a completely walled village nestled in a beautiful valley of the Pyrenees. The original town dates from 1098 and is fortified because of its strategic position in lands that changed hands between French and Spanish occupation. The town is tightly packed within the original castle walls and is bounded on one side by the road running up into the Cerdagne and on the other by the Conflent of the rivers Tet and Cady. There will be time for exploration and lunch before returning to our hotel in Collioure. Meals: (B) Breakfast
Day 4: MON May 7th, COLLIOURE
Today after breakfast the wonderful seaside village of Collioure is ours to explore. The great artist Matisse spent many summers in Collioure, with 1905 being the most notable. During this time he was joined by Derain and together they produced 242 paintings, drawings, and sculptures in and around the village surrounding the small Catalan harbour. These works displayed such vibrant colours and brushstrokes that the artists were referred to as 'les cage aux Fauves' (wild beasts) and it is from these Collioure works that the new art movement, Fauvism
was formed. Meals: (B) Breakfast
Day 5: TUE May 8th, COLLIOURE
We enjoy breakfast before enjoying our second full day in this charming tiny french port. Visit the 13th century fortress that juts out into the harbour. Purposely get lost in the maze of little streets of the red-roofed 'Vieux Quartier' (old quarter), or enjoy taking a walk up to one of the old fortresses overlooking the town. For those interested in swimming, there is a wonderful sandy beach to enjoy and relax at. This area boasts bright sun and deep blue skies almost every day. Later that evening gather with your travelling companions and enjoy dinner in one of the many cafés and restaurants that line the streets of this quaint village. Meals: (B) Breakfast
Day 6: WED May 9th, COLLIOURE to CADAQUES
oday we travel over the border into Spain and to the lovely seaside town of Cadaques. We will spend the next 5 nights in Cadaques, a small fishing port nestled between sea and mountain, is located at the end of Cap de Creus in Catalonia. Meals: (B) Breakfast
Day 7: THU May 10th, CADAQUES
We enjoy breakfast before having a leisurely day in Cadaques. Explore the town square, where the village elders sit on their benches and are glad to tell you about the days when Salvador Dali lived there. Dali made this little town famous all over the world. A number of artists travel there regularly. Why not take a walk down the bumpy, windy but sunlit little streets towards the chapel San Sebastia, where you'll get a glimpse of the rock, located to the east of the bay, called Cucurucu. Meals: (B) Breakfast
Day 8: FRI May 11th, CADAQUES
AFter breakfast this morning we leave the hotel and walk to Salvador Dali's home in Portlligat. We visit Portlligat House-museum, Dali's favorite and fixed abode from 1930, the place in which he normally lived and worked up till 1982. Salvador Dali spent many summers in Portlligat and once said (in 1920)
"I have spent a delightful summer, as always in the perfect and
dreamy town of Cadaques. There alongside the Latin sea,
I have been quenched by light and colour". We return to Cadaques where we will enjoy free time for lunch and an afternoon at leisure. Meals: (B) Breakfast
Day 9: SAT May 12th, CADAQUES
We enjoy breakfast before enjoying our last day exploring Savador Dali's dreamy town of Cadaques. We have planned this morning to take a boat cruise that affords wonderful views of the town and the convoluted coastline. We will return in time for lunch and an afternoon free to explore more of the town, its art gallaries and ceramic shops. Meals: (B) Breakfast
Day 10 to 13: SUN May 13th thru TUE May 15th, CADAQUES to BARCELONA
Today we travel along the Mediterranean coast road to the vibrant city of Barcelona.
We have planned to stay here for 3 nights which will give us two full days to explore this wonderful city. Barcelona has always been a lively place loved by many artists such as Picasso, Miro and greatly influenced by the dynamic master architect, Antony Gaudi. Many wonders of architecture of the city have been designed or remodelled by him, most notably the "Sagrada Familia", (his sandcastle
cathedral. Much of the city bears traces of his individualistic and stylish design. Other most visited Gaudi sites are the "Casa Battlo" and the delightful Guell Park. Barcelona's Gothic quarter bears witness to the splendour enjoyed by the cityfrom the 13th to the 15th centuries. We will enjoy a city sightseeing tour of Barcelona and a Flamenco show during our stay. Meals: (B) Breakfast
