"The Hot Five Jazzmakers" are one of Canada's most versatile traditional jazz groups offering a mix of ragtime, blues, spirituals and classic jazz. They perform their jazz with the flavour of the 1920's/30's. Influences from the "goodtime era" include King Oliver, early Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Clarence Williams, Bessie Smith, early Duke Ellington, and Fats Waller. The band also enjoys playing numbers from the later jazz revival.
The band has a Saturday matinee residency at the "C'est what?" at 67 Front St. in downtown Toronto. They have performed many times in New Orleans; toured Northern Germany twice; represented Canada at the "Edinburgh Jazz Festival", the Marciac Festival in France and performed at numerous other festivals in the USA and Canada. In In January 2005 they led a group of 60 passengers on a 7 night cruise on the aboard "Carnival Conquest" out of New Orleans, with daily/nightly public performances.
For 2006 the band plan their third "Cruisin' with the Hot Five Jazzmakers" the 'H5JM will perform on Carnival Cruise Line's "Destiny"- a 7 day cruise out of San Juan. - Feb 04 - 11, 2007.
- Brian Towers - trombone/leader/vocals
Is a dedicated advocate of New Orleans style jazz. He is also a correspondent for a leading USA jazz publication, the "Mississippi Rag" where he writes on the Canadian jazz scene. He has led the H5JM for the past 17 years and also leads an international band annually for the New Orleans French Quarter Festival. - Janet Shaw - reeds & vocals
Considered one of Canada's most exciting, traditional jazz reed players, be it clarinet or saxophone. Married to Brian Towers with two teen-aged daughters, Jan has been with the H5JM since its inception. Her unique singing voice results from studying the great stylists of the 20's/30's. She is a key asset in every area. - Jamie MacPherson - tenor banjo.
Vibrant and dazzling on the banjo, Jamie always projects a happy and joyful image. He was twice "All-Canada Banjo Champ" in the 1980's, in his pre-jazz days. Jamie also plays with the Ragweed Jazz Band, another Toronto-based outfit. So far the only member without a vocal feature spot but this could change! - Bryan Day - string bass & vocals
Another of the H5JM's high calibre vocalists and a master of his chosen instrument, Bryan was a member of the Sensation Jazz Band for many years. Prior to that he played in a guitar outfit with a "Beach Boys" flavour and his early influences can still be heard in his vocals. First choice for singing the hurtin' songs!
- Andrej Saradin - trumpet & vocals
Brings youthful energy and a carefree approach to his trumpet playing and vocals. Andrej is a new Canadian and came to us fairly recently from Slovakia, where he was the oldest member of a Dixieland band. Now he finds himself the youngest member of a Canadian jazz band but he has adapted quickly and happily.
