The Temple of Horus - The Falcon God
The Temple of Horus in Edfu (also known as the Temple of Edfu) is considered the best-preserved cult temple in Egypt. This partly because it was built later than most: in the Ptolemaic era from 237 to 57 BC. It reflects traditional pharaonic architecture and so provides an excellent idea of how all the temples once looked. Edfu is also very large: the second largest in Egypt after Karnak Temple. The provincial town of Edfu is located about halfway between Luxor (115km away) and Aswan (105km) and 65km north of Kom Ombo.
Day 5: Wed. Oct. 28th, NILE CRUISE - EDFU to KOM OMBO to ASWAN
An exhilarating carriage ride takes you through town to the Temple of Horus, the Falcon God. Continue sailing to Kom Ombo to visit the Graeco-Roman style Temple of Sobek, the Crocodile God. The Great Temple of Abu Simbel
Perhaps after the Giza pyramids, or coincident with them, the great temple of Abu Simbel presents the most familiar image of ancient Egypt to the modern traveler and reader. When the conservation efforts to preserve the temple from the soon-to be built High Aswan Dam and its rising waters were begun in the 1960s, images of the colossal statues filled newspapers and books. The temples were dismantled and relocated in 1968 on the desert plateau, 200 feet above and 600 feet west of their original location.
Day 7: Fri. Oct. 30th, ASWAN to ABU SIMBEL to CAIRO
Disembark after breakfast and transfer to Aswan Airport for your short flight to the dramatic site of Abu Simel. The great temple of Abu Simbel is dedicated to the glory of Pharoh Rames II. The towering statues are 60 feet high in height and the most photographed phenomenon in all of Egypt. Afterwards we fly back to Cairo where upon arrival we will transfer to our hotel.
